Ask the Chief of the Anna Police:by Kenny Jenks A weekly column allowing readers access to useful information about law enforcement issues in the Anna area. Each week I receive requests for information from people in the Anna area. Having received repeat questions on the same subjects, I thought I would write a weekly column that might help answer some of these questions in the public forum. This column is the personal opinion of Kenny Jenks and is not the official opinion of the City of Anna or the Anna Police Department. Q: Chief, your officers are great! I had an issue with my tire and the officer stopped and actually changed it for me. I felt so bad that he got filthy in his uniform. Please pass along my gratitude to the officer for his help and please accept my thanks for all that your department does. Evonne — Van Alstyne Thank you Evonne for taking the time to send this e-mail. I will pass along your thanks to the officer that helped you. Chief’s Comment for the Week: Holy cow, spring break is next week! Calls requiring police response go up when school is in recess. Incidents of vandalism increase, as do the crimes of burglary and theft. Watch your neighborhoods for suspicious activity and report any at the time you see it to the police. For those of us that are parents, a reminder: Please, keep an eye on your children. Know where they are, what they are doing and with who. Please consider that a cell phone call or a text message is not “keeping an eye” on them! Remember, our children will lie to us, even those that are historically good kids. Instances when our children might lie to us: They may lie when faced with consequences (or a variety of other reasons including a need for independence). They may lie when they want to do something they know you will not approve of (teens want to establish an identity that is independent of their parents’ knowledge and authority. Withholding details about their lives is a way for them to gain this). Teens also lie to protect themselves from parental reaction, teacher reaction and any authority figure’s reaction (think back when we were teens. Did you tell your parents about everything you did? When they asked you, did you ever lie to them about minor stuff just to avoid the conflict?). Please help spare them, and you, from any trouble they might get into because you trusted them to make the right decisions alone or in their group. Remember, they do not have the life experiences necessary to always guide them to a good decision. That is what we, the parents, are there for. Have a safe Spring Break!!! *Phone numbers: Emergency???? Dial 911. To have a police officer sent to you in a non-emergency, call 972-547-5350. During normal business hours, the APD number is 972-924-2848. *For Crime Prevention information visit www.annacrimewatch.org or "http://www.annatexas.gov" and go to the police pages.
